What is the 3G Sunset?
The UK’s mobile services currently use four different ‘generations’ of mobile technology: 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G.
The 3G networks have been around since 2003 and are used to deliver calls, texts, and lower-speed data services. All mobile providers have decided to switch off their 3G networks, starting from early 2023.

How does this affect Turnkey customers?
This means that any older 3G webservers you have that are using the 3G network, will, once 3G is switched off, fall back to 2G only. This may cause problems for you as 2G is considerably slower.
Turnkey Instruments products are designed and manufactured to last indefinitely. This may mean you are still using older versions of Webservers which might be affected by the 3G Sunset.
How do I know if I have an older 3G Webserver?
The older generation are easily distinguishable from the latest models. Older Webservers are are white and have black cables coming out of the top. The latest version is an all-silver metal box.
What has Turnkey done to help their customers with the 3G Sunset?
The Sunset is not something that was announced suddenly – this was something the mobile networks had been planning for a number of years. Once announced, Turnkey decided to redesign our Webservers, and the latest (4G-based) model was launched approximately 5 years ago. Every latest edition Webserver will work on 4G, however the older models will need to be upgraded.
Will I need a new SIM card?
The good news is, that your SIM card will still work and it will be transferable to a new 4G Webserver. If you have paid for line rental already, then the existing term left (along with your SIM card) can be moved over.
What do I have to do to upgrade?
If you have a newer Webserver model, you do not need to do anything. If you have an old one, a new Webserver will need to be purchased, as the older models are no longer supported. Contact your Area Sales Manager to begin the process.
What about 5G and the future?
There are no immediate plans for networks to phase out 4G, and its use is expected to continue past 2030. It is also likely that, as Turnkey Webserver designs are periodically revised, later release versions will include 5G support.
